John Lorenz

Co-founder and Partner, FractureStudies LLC, Edgewood, NM

John has specialized in understanding naturally-fractured reservoirs since 1981, and founded FractureStudies LLC with Scott Cooper in 2008. To help others with similar interests John and Scott wrote the textbooks “Atlas of Natural and Induced Fractures in Core,” in 2018, and “Applied Concepts in Fractured Reservoirs” in 2020.

Upon earning an undergraduate degree, John headed off to Morocco to teach English and learn Arabic with the Peace Corps, returned to earn an MSc (his thesis described a Moroccan Triassic rift basin), worked for the USGS (1975 to 1977), and then on to Princeton for a PhD. He joined Sandia National Laboratories where he worked as a geologist from 1981 to 2007, doing fractured-reservoir studies in areas ranging from Alaska to Algeria to Texas.

John is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and served as Elected Editor (2001-2004) and President (2009-2010). His papers and presentations have been awarded several AAPG Levorsen and Jules Braunstein awards. John is also a commercial pilot and flight instructor and has ferried aircraft across the U.S. in both directions.
