World-class training for the modern energy industry

Mark Rowan

President, Rowan Consulting, Inc.

Mark is a structural geologist with a world-wide reputation for expertise in salt tectonics, having been at the forefront of developing new ideas and revising old theories and applying them in the Gulf of Mexico and other global salt basins. Mark worked in the oil and gas industry for 10 years (Sohio, Geo-Logic Systems and Alastair Beach Associates) and then as a Research Professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder before founding Rowan Consulting in 1998. Although Mark’s background includes research in many types of tectonic environments, his primary research and consulting interests are focused on the styles and kinematics of salt tectonics, the processes of salt-sediment interaction, the architecture and evolution of divergent margins, and the applications to petroleum exploration. He has collaborated with virtually every other well-known figure in salt tectonics, whether in academia or in the petroleum industry. He has been the author or coauthor of approximately 100 peer-reviewed papers and 230 abstracts, has been an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer and an AAPG International Distinguished Instructor, and is a recipient of both the Doris M. Curtis Medal from the GCSSEPM and the Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award from the AAPG.
